Pros: great to know that a place like the Centre exists as a resource Location is fitting for the demographic of the area, presenter had a lot of knowledge and experience to pass on.
Cons: lack of children to interact with, time may have been better utilized by a visit to an alternative school.
Don' t get me wrong, the trip to the Native Friendship Centre was a good one. The woman presenting had a wonderfully vast knowledge her own heritage and was able to convey through her vivid descriptions the amount and type of work that she (and the Centre) offers to the community. It was great to see a resource such as the Centre available to people in Victoria. Coming from a mixed family of First Peoples, I realize the stigmas that can be attached to certain demographics of people obtaining assistance. The Centre is a valuable place for people in need of it. What I felt was missing from that visit was the absence of actual interaction that we had. It was simply a conveyance of information that I felt could have been done through a perusal of the website or a phone call if something in nature to what the Centre focuses on came about. Perhaps the time could have been better utilized if we could have visited while a kid's program was being held or there was something we could have been involved in and not just observed. Good visit, great presentation, lack of interaction. |
